Do You Have a Clear Vision For Your Appraisal Business?

Do you have a clear vision for your business?

Many years ago I didn’t really think about the future. All I thought about was how I wanted to build my appraisal business, I wanted to make a lot of money, I wanted to provide employment, I wanted to be really successful…

But I didn’t really know or really realize what true success was.

If I could do it over, I would have changed my business model from day one. And so now whenever I work with an appraiser (or whoever the client might be), our first step that we always talk about is…

“What kind of life do you want to have?”

That is really the essence of what we’re building our business for. And it’s not just to make a lot of money.

I was working 80-100 hours a week every single week and thought that was success.

Looking back… from day one I wish I would have identified the type of lifestyle I wanted to live then… so that I could have built my business in a way that would support that lifestyle.

Because what happens for most appraisers like myself and most other people is we build the business, and then we become a slave to our business because it wasn’t built the right way from the ground up.

We didn’t build it in a way that was going to support our lifestyle.

We build this business and become an employee or it becomes a job, and we try to craft some kind of lifestyle that will fit around the business instead of building a business that’s going to support your lifestyle.

So I encourage you… What kind of lifestyle do you want to live? It’s important that you start thinking about it and it’s never too late to do this.

It’s important that you start thinking, “OK… as I build my business… as I kind of reformat and restart again with things slowing down a little bit… that I build my business in a way that supports the ideal lifestyle.”

And it goes to the old saying, “If you don’t know where you’re going, there’s no way to build a bridge to get there.”

For me – I wanted to build my business in a way that wasn’t dependent on me doing the inspections. I wanted to build a business in a way that wasn’t dependent on my having to sign on the majority of appraisals.

I wanted to have the freedom to to be able to work virtually if I needed to.

Everyone has a different vision for what they want their life to look like.

For me, I just didn’t want to be tied down where I had to do every inspection, I had to go out, I had to sign every report.

When you diversify your business in a way where you’re doing primarily non-lender work (which is what we do), it’s much easier to do that.

So the point here is make sure you have a clear vision.

Think about what you’re building towards, and then that way you won’t end up being a slave or an employee to your own business.
